Keno: (with smiles) Welcome to the YOUNG AND BOOKED Series Ms Lara, thank you for having this interview.
Ms Lara: (smiles) Thank you Keno, for having me as a guest on this amazing series, it’s a special thing you’re doing on this blog.
*pssst….Hey YOU reading this, thank you for joining us in promoting the Nigerian Book Industry!.
Keno: (smiles) Alright, I’ll get right into the questions now….Your book “Love Is Beautiful When In Bloom” (from the blurb) explores the essence of people meeting and falling in love. What (person, place, experience) inspired you to write it?
Ms Lara: (smiles) Love Is Beautiful When In Bloom is a collection of short stories I wrote over the years. The oldest story dates back to 2012. So, it was written at different moments in life when I was looking to have fun; when I was heartbroken; when I needed to take a stand; and when I needed an escape. But most importantly, the stories are fictional, resulting from an overactive imagination.
Keno: (nods) That sounds interesting. Question 2, What led to you beginning your Authorship journey and when did it start?
Ms Lara: (smiles) Reading became my hobby in 2006. After reading and falling in love with many stories, I started writing my own in 2007.

Keno: (smiles) So it’s been over a decade! Question 3, As someone who has authored fiction and non-fiction books, which would you say is more challenging to write and why?
Fiction is using your imagination to mimic reality, whereas non-fiction deals with facts
Ms Lara: Fiction is more challenging to write than non-fiction. The answer is quite simple, fiction is using your imagination to mimic reality, you have to create things, and more times than not, you have to be very logical when you’re writing so the story isn’t leaning towards a bias, whereas non-fiction deals with facts, so it’s easier to navigate.
Keno: (nods) That’s an interesting way to put it. Imagination vs. Facts! I’ll be thinking about that for a while. Question 4, When I first got the idea to create a book blog, your blog Naija Book Bae inspired me and helped me set the foundation for mine! How/why/when did you first get into book blogging? Give us the gist!
My friend read one of my angry vents that I had written on paper and randomly suggested I start a proper blog because I liked writing, stories, feelings, etc. Back then, when you thought about blogs, it was usually accompanied by the mental image of a website where an anonymous person shares everything in their life.
Ms Lara: (smiles) I’m so glad my blog is helping people start and structure their own blogs! I started blogging in 2011. Back then, Tumblr was the main thing. I used to be so emo, sharing quotes, things about myself, books, and films, interacting with my friends, being a fangirl, and running a supermodels blog. I was addicted to Tumblr and hardly slept.

So, it’s nearing the end of 2012, and I’ve tried to set-up on different blogging platforms. Still, nothing worked until WordPress, and that’s how I discovered talking about books was a thing online, and I switched to book blogging, joined the online book community, and never looked back.
Keno: (nods) Wow, as someone who is relatively new to the whole online book lovers community thing, I wonder how it must have been back in 2012! Anyways, I’m glad you started then. Question 5, As someone who has interviewed and collaborated with several authors in Nigeria and the diaspora yourself, what is your favorite thing about the world of books?
Ms Lara: It’s the reason I fell in love with reading in the first place; it’s an escape from reality.

Keno: (nods) That’s so relatable. I think of books as a form of transport. The right book can take you far away from reality, and sometimes you just really need to get away! I’m glad you didn’t give up too. Question 6, Which one of your books would you recommend to a first-time reader and why?
Ms Lara: (smiles) I would recommend Not Just Another Interlude because it’s a novel that takes you on a sweet journey.
Keno: Interesting. Question 7, As the author of a self-publishing guide, what is your best advice for someone looking to publish their book themselves?
Ms Lara: You’re simply an author, don’t edit your book yourself, hire more than one person to help with the editing process, and if you are not certified as a graphic designer, because many people think they understand the laws of design, and they don’t.
Keno: (nods) That’s really good advice. And finally, Question 8, What type of work or projects can we expect from you in the future?
Ms Lara: (smiles) I’m a writer of love stories, so more romance and love stories.
Keno: (smiles) That’s good to hear! I wish you all the best in your future endeavors and will definitely be actively following your journey! It was lovely to have you, Ms Lara. Thank you for this interview and for being our guest on the YOUNG AND BOOKED Series.
