Book Title: Scourge
Author: Adekola Temitayo.
Published: 2022
My Rating: 4.42/5.0.⭐️ A simple, short coming-of-age drama with themes like Rape, Friendship, Politics and Revenge (I RECOMMEND if you’re interested in these topics!)
Jealousy, envy, entitlement, nothing ruins relationships quite like these things……
I was asked to read/review this book a few weeks ago by the author…. Along with his other book; TRAUMA which I have already made a review of.
So let’s get right into the review…..!
This book falls under the genre of Drama, and if I’m to be very honest I have not read a Drama novel since High School!
So I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. But it definitely wasn’t disappointing. The scenic descriptions were nice and the dramatization between conversations were good too.
This book takes a stab at delving into a very important societal and psychological topic: RAPE and its traumatizing effects/consequences through the life of its main character: Enitan.

“What difference does it make? It won’t make a difference to her if you hang her. She will just smile. Forget it, sir.”
Tanko
The story began with an air of mystery that captivated my attention.
Enitan is a dark, beautiful high school student who is well-known and celebrated in her small community for being very smart.
Remi is her best friend, also smart and beautiful but not quite up to Enitan’s standard. In other words, she has to settle for being second best. However, she loves her best friend and they both have a very good relationship.
Enitan lives with her sickly grandma and she luckily wins a scholarship for the university. However, just as it begins to seem like her life is going in a better trajectory, she is raped!
The book takes us through her life after the tragic event. Consumed by pain and a strong need to take revenge on those who literally stole her future from her, Enitan goes on a killing spree!
Yup, you read that right!
Maybe it’s because it’s a short story and I’m used to much longer, more drawn out novels but I found myself wishing the book were longer.
I think if it were longer with more details and depth included, I would have been able to connect with the characters and the whole story more.
“Everything in man’s life reflects a choice he or she made: it is either of good or bad outcomes.”
CID GIDEON
The story comes to a rather sad end though of course, I can’t tell you how exactly it ended, because that would be a MAJOR spoiler. In all, it was an interesting and entertaining novel despite the level of misery involved and I think the author was trying to pass a message that we always have a choice in life situations, and whatever choice we make will have powerful results/effects on us, our lives and those around us too!
